About

Otocinclus vestitus is a small loricariid catfish native to Peru and Bolivia's Amazon basin tributaries, similar in appearance and behavior to other otocinclus species traded under the general name 'oto catfish.' In the aquarium trade, multiple Otocinclus species are often mixed and sold simply as 'Otocinclus' — O. vestitus, O. affinis, O. macrospilus, and others may be sold interchangeably or mixed in lots from South American collectors.

All Otocinclus share the characteristic miniature loricariid body plan: flattened underside, bony plate armoring, underslung sucker mouth for surface attachment and algae rasping, and a slender, elongated body reaching 3.5–4.5 cm. Coloration is typically brown-olive on the dorsal surface with a dark lateral stripe and pale cream underside — functional camouflage for their shallow, algae-covered stream habitat.

In their natural habitat, otocinclus inhabit fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich rivers and streams in vast schools numbering hundreds to thousands of individuals, grazing on periphyton (algae and associated organisms) from rocky and sandy substrate surfaces. The large-group lifestyle makes them stress-prone in isolation or very small groups in captivity.

In planted aquariums, otocinclus perform an essential ecological role: their constant, methodical grazing removes soft green algae and diatom films from plant leaves, glass, and hardscape — forms of algae that are difficult to remove by other means and that can smother slow-growing plants.

Care Guide

Otocinclus require fully cycled, established aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 3–15 dGH, and temperatures 20–26°C. Never introduce them to new or unstable aquariums — they are intolerant of ammonia and nitrite spikes.

A minimum 40-liter planted aquarium with existing algae and biofilm growth is suitable. Dense plantings, smooth rocks, driftwood, and good filtration with surface agitation provide the oxygenated, algae-rich environment they need. Bright lighting encourages algae growth to supplement their diet.

Supplement natural algae with algae wafers, blanched zucchini (a universal favorite), blanched cucumber, and spinach. They must always have food available — they graze continuously and starve quickly in algae-poor tanks. Establish a reliable supplemental feeding routine.

Otocinclus are entirely peaceful and compatible with all community species including freshwater shrimp, snails, small tetras, corydoras, and all planted tank inhabitants. Avoid aggressive or large fish that may harass them.

Keep in groups of at least 4–6. Quarantine new fish carefully before tank introduction — wild-caught specimens can carry internal parasites. Water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain the pristine conditions this species requires.
