Otocinclus affinis
Origin: Southeastern Brazil
Otocinclus affinis, the Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish or Otocinclus, is the go-to algae cleaner for planted nano and mid-sized tanks. Reaching only 4–5 cm, it grazes constantly on soft green algae, diatoms, and biofilm without damaging delicate plant leaves. Must be kept in groups of at least 5; solitary individuals waste away. Sensitive during acclimatisation but robust once settled. Provide algae and supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables. Sold in a 5-pack.
5-pack essential — lone fish do poorly. Established tank with algae growth preferred; introduce after tank has been running 4+ weeks. Soft slightly acidic water. Temperature 22–26 °C. Supplement with algae wafers and blanched zucchini. Very sensitive to ammonia spikes.
