About

Otocinclus flexilis is one of the southernmost-ranging Otocinclus species, distributed across southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina — regions where winter water temperatures regularly drop into the mid-teens Celsius. This cold tolerance makes it exceptional within the genus and uniquely suited to unheated or subtropical aquaria where other otocinclus would struggle. It reaches up to 5 cm, making it one of the larger members of the genus.

In the wild, O. flexilis inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams and river tributaries in the La Plata river system drainages, where it forages over algae-coated rocks and plant stems. The seasonal temperature swings of its native subtropical habitat appear to have conferred genuine adaptability to cool water. In summer it experiences warmer conditions, while winter temperatures in some localities approach 15°C — conditions that are fatal to most tropical Otocinclus.

For aquarium keeping, O. flexilis is an appealing option for hobbyists in temperate climates who want effective algae management without the expense or energy of a heater. It performs best in well-oxygenated, moderately flowing setups with live plants and established biofilm. Like all otocinclus, group housing of six or more individuals is essential for the fish's health and natural behaviour.

Care Guide

Water: Adaptable; pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 16–24°C — genuinely cold-tolerant and suitable for unheated setups in temperate rooms. Tank: 40 litres minimum with live plants, smooth rocks, and moderate flow; higher oxygenation benefits this cool-water species. Feeding: Biofilm, blanched courgette, cucumber, and spirulina wafers; cooler water slows metabolism but the diet remains the same. Breeding: Reportedly bred in cool, well-maintained aquaria; soft to moderately hard water and varied diet encourage conditioning. Compatibility: Excellent with temperate species including white cloud mountain minnows, hillstream loaches, and cold-water tetras.
