About

Otocinclus hoppei is a Brazilian species that has long been in the aquarium trade, sometimes exported alongside O. affinis and O. vittatus under generalised common names. It is a typical Otocinclus in appearance — small, armoured, with a prominent dark lateral stripe — and is known for being somewhat more tolerant of varied water conditions than some of its congeners, which contributes to its popularity in the trade.

In nature, O. hoppei is found in coastal and interior river systems of Brazil, where it inhabits shallow, vegetated margins of streams and rivers. It forages in groups over algae-coated hard surfaces throughout the day. The species occupies a wide geographic range that encompasses several distinct river systems, suggesting it is genuinely adaptable to differing water chemistries.

For aquarists, O. hoppei is one of the most manageable Otocinclus to maintain and is recommended for hobbyists new to the genus. Its acceptance of prepared foods makes it less vulnerable during the critical post-import period, and its adaptability to a wider pH and hardness range reduces the risk of sudden decline associated with water chemistry mismatches. Standard Otocinclus care — groups of six, clean water, vegetable supplements — applies.

Care Guide

Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–26°C; moderately adaptable but benefits from regular partial water changes. Tank: 40 litres or more with live plants; smooth hardscape for grazing; sponge filtration ideal. Feeding: Readily accepts algae wafers and blanched vegetables alongside natural biofilm — one of the easier otocinclus to feed. Breeding: Occasionally bred in captivity under soft-water conditions; eggs deposited on plant leaves. Compatibility: Excellent with tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and shrimp; a safe choice for virtually any peaceful community.
