Oxyropsis wrightiana
Also known as: Oxyropsis wrightiana, Pointed-Nose Otocinclus
Origin: South America
Oxyropsis wrightiana is the type and best-known species of the small genus Oxyropsis, a group of slender, elongated loricariids within the otocinclus alliance. It is characterised by a notably pointed snout — longer and more tapered than in Otocinclus — which allows it to access algae and biofilm in fine crevices and along the midribs of narrow plant leaves. Its body is streamlined and its armour is finely scaled, giving it an elegant, torpedo-like appearance.
In the wild, O. wrightiana occurs in soft, slightly acidic South American streams where aquatic vegetation and submerged wood are abundant. Like Otocinclus, it is a periphyton specialist that forages continuously throughout the day in loose groups, moving systematically over every available grazing surface. Its narrower snout makes it particularly effective at cleaning narrow-leafed plants such as Vallisneria, Blyxa, and hairgrass — species that the broader-mouthed Otocinclus can struggle to graze efficiently.
In the aquarium, Oxyropsis wrightiana is a rewarding and visually distinct alternative to Otocinclus for the planted tank. Its slender profile and more precise grazing behaviour make it an excellent addition to high-tech planted aquaria with delicate fine-leafed plants. Care is similar to Otocinclus: groups of at least four to six, excellent water quality, soft slightly acidic water, and reliable supplemental feeding.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic at pH 5.5–7.0 and 22–27°C; pristine quality with low ammonia and nitrite; frequent partial water changes. Tank: 60 litres minimum with dense planting including fine-leafed species; smooth driftwood provides additional grazing substrate. Feeding: Biofilm primary; supplement with blanched courgette, cucumber, and algae wafers placed on plant surfaces. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; group housing in soft, warm water is a prerequisite. Compatibility: Fully peaceful with nano and small community species, shrimp, and snails.
