About

Ompok pabo is a sizeable South Asian silurid native to the rivers of the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages in India and northeast India, including streams descending from the Himalayan foothills. It is a robust, fast-moving predator with a large gaping mouth, deeply forked tail, and scaleless body. In the wild it inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers in addition to larger river systems.

In captivity, Ompok pabo demands a very large tank with powerful filtration and significant water movement. It is an active fish that requires open swimming space and will become stressed in confined quarters. Feed generously with whole fish, prawns, earthworms, and other large meaty items two or three times per week. Its size and predatory nature restrict tankmates to large, robust species.

This catfish is best suited to the specialist large-fish aquarist who can maintain the demanding environmental requirements of a powerful Himalayan river species. Long-lived and personable, it will grow to recognise its keeper and can become a rewarding long-term companion for those prepared to meet its substantial needs.

Care Guide

Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15); strong oxygenation and flow. Tank: 400 L minimum; powerful canister or sump filtration; smooth large rocks; minimal sharp decor. Feeding: Whole fish, large prawns, earthworms, fish fillet; feed 2–3 times weekly. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; seasonal river spawner. Compatibility: Advanced; will eat fish of considerable size; house only with very large robust species.
