Myleus pacu
Also known as: Pacu Myleus
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Myleus pacu is a chunky, rounded Myleus from the Amazon and Orinoco basins whose powerful bicuspid molar teeth are adapted for processing hard seeds and plant material — a niche closer to true pacus than most Myleus. Its silver flanks carry a subtle iridescence and it becomes an impressively proportioned fish at full size.
In captivity it is easily maintained on a varied herbivorous diet including fruits and vegetables. Its peaceful disposition and robust build make it a durable, long-lived companion in large freshwater displays. Regular access to whole small fruits for dental stimulation is beneficial.
Not restricted under piranha ownership laws in most regions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; broadly adaptable within these parameters. Tank: Minimum 600L for a school; powerful filtration; open space; provide hard fruit periodically for dental engagement. Feeding: Herbivore; pellets, blanched vegetables, fruits, leafy greens; avoid protein-heavy foods. Breeding: Egg-scattering species; rarely bred in aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; one of the most undemanding large Myleus for mixed South American community setups.
