Betta picta
Also known as: Painted Betta, Javan Mouthbrooding Betta
Origin: Java, Sumatra
Betta picta is one of the more widely available wild Betta species, native to streams and rivers of Java and Sumatra. It is a mouthbrooding species with a stockier body shape than B. splendens, and males carry eggs and fry in their mouths. Its vertical striped pattern and peaceful temperament make it a popular choice among wild Betta enthusiasts.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: minimum 60L per pair; well-planted with hiding spots and a tight-fitting lid. Feeding: carnivore — live and frozen invertebrates; may accept quality micro pellets. Behaviour: peaceful; males mouthbrood eggs; pairs should be given privacy during spawning. Compatibility: good with similarly sized peaceful fish; avoid fin-nippers.
