About

Acanthocobitis pictilis stands out within its genus for the exceptional intricacy of its dorsal patterning — a close-set mosaic of dark brown, rust, and cream markings that creates an almost artistic effect under good aquarium lighting. The species is native to the cobble-bed streams and rocky rivers of the Mekong and Salween drainages in Myanmar and Thailand, where its elaborate patterning provides near-perfect camouflage against the complex substrate texture.

In the aquarium, A. pictilis is more demanding than A. botia, requiring cleaner water, stronger flow, and more stable water chemistry to maintain its remarkable patterning in peak condition. The intricate colouration fades noticeably when the fish is stressed or water quality declines, making the pattern itself a useful health monitoring tool. Groups of four to six should be maintained for optimal social behaviour.

The species is somewhat less commonly available than A. botia but is encountered with reasonable regularity through Southeast Asian exporters. Its standout patterning makes it a desirable addition to an intermediate-level hillstream biotope, and it pairs beautifully with species such as Schistura pridii and Homaloptera orthogoniata in a mixed Mekong hillstream display.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate to strong flow; water quality is critical — patterning fades rapidly with declining conditions. Tank: 70 L minimum; cobble-bed substrate with smooth rounded pebbles; strong directional flow; excellent mechanical filtration. Feeding: Omnivore — frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, and sinking pellets; varied protein-rich diet maintains vibrant patterning. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; condition with cool water changes and increased flow; handle with soft mesh to avoid spine injuries. Compatibility: Peaceful toward other species; mildly territorial with conspecifics; good for mixed Southeast Asian hillstream biotopes.
