Pao palembangensis
Also known as: Black Spot Target Puffer, Peat Palembang Puffer, Dark Target Puffer
Origin: Southern Sumatra, Indonesia (peat river drainages)
This form of Pao palembangensis originates from the dark peat-stained rivers of southern Sumatra and shows intensified black concentric target-ring markings on a deep amber-brown background, thought to result from the high tannin content of the blackwater environment. It is one of the most visually striking of the Pao species when seen in good condition. The aquarium must replicate peat-river conditions with soft, acidic water, tannin staining from driftwood or peat, and subdued lighting. It grows to a substantial size and requires a correspondingly large aquarium. A powerful canister filter providing both mechanical and biological filtration, with regular partial water changes, is the backbone of successful husbandry.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28°C, soft and acidic; tannin staining beneficial; zero ammonia/nitrite. Tank: 200 L minimum; driftwood, Indian almond leaves, dim lighting; robust plants optional. Feeding: Mussels, clams, large snails, whole crayfish, earthworms; hard-shelled prey multiple times weekly. Breeding: Not recorded in captivity; presumed seasonal spawner linked to Sumatran wet season. Compatibility: Solitary only; extremely aggressive toward all tankmates.
