Pao palembangensis
Also known as: Deep-water Target Puffer, Sumatran Deep Puffer, Palembang Deep Form
Origin: Sumatra, Indonesia (deep river channels)
This deep-water form of Pao palembangensis is collected from the deeper main channels of Sumatran rivers rather than the shallower peat-river margins, where cooler temperatures and higher dissolved oxygen levels prevail. Specimens from deep-channel collection sites show fainter, less saturated target-ring markings and a slightly more elongate body compared to the typical shallow-water palembangensis. The deeper origin may require slightly higher oxygen saturation in captivity; surface agitation and good water movement are essential. The care protocol otherwise mirrors standard palembangensis husbandry: large aquarium, hard prey for beak maintenance, solitary housing, and impeccable water quality. This form is an uncommon find in specialist puffer collections.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, soft to moderate; high dissolved oxygen; strong filtration with surface agitation. Tank: 200 L minimum; sand substrate, driftwood; avoid shallow stagnant zones; powerful canister filter. Feeding: Large snails, mussels, clams, crayfish, whole prawns; hard prey multiple times weekly. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; seasonal Sumatran river spawner. Compatibility: Solitary only; extremely aggressive; dedicated single-specimen tank required.
