Palythoa grandis
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Palythoa grandis produces individual polyps significantly larger than typical Zoanthus, with thick, fleshy disc forms in muted tones of brown, green, and grey that contrast with pale oral discs. Its robust build and expansive polyps give it a dramatic, imposing presence on the reef structure compared to smaller zoanthid species. Highly durable and adaptable, it is one of the best palythoa species for beginners seeking a substantial colony that makes an immediate visual impact.
Place under medium light with moderate flow. Feed supplementally with small meaty foods or reef snow 1–2 times per week. Handle with care using gloves—like all palythoa, may contain palytoxin. Maintain stable reef parameters. Propagate by fragging with a clean blade.
