Palythoa grandis
Origin: Indo-Pacific (aquacultured)
Palythoa grandis 'Purple Death' is one of the most strikingly coloured large-polyped Palythoa morphs, displaying deep purple to violet colouration with large, round polyp discs. It is among the most robust and fast-growing coral types in the reef hobby but carries an important health warning: Palythoa species contain among the highest concentrations of palytoxin of any aquarium coral — a potent naturally occurring toxin that can cause severe illness if skin wounds or mucous membranes are exposed, or if the coral is heated.
Medium PAR (100–250). Moderate flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 23–28°C. Grows and spreads rapidly. IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: Always handle Palythoa with nitrile or latex gloves covering any cuts or abrasions. Never frag while leaning over the coral (eye protection recommended). Never heat or boil Palythoa or equipment in contact with it. Keep children and pets away during fragging. Spreads aggressively — frag and trade regularly to control colony size.
