Sturisoma panamense
Also known as: Panama Whiptail Catfish, Panamanian Sturisoma
Origin: Central America (Panama)
Sturisoma panamense is remarkable within the Loricariidae for its occurrence in Panama, one of the northernmost records of any Sturisoma species and an indication of the family's historical dispersal across the Isthmus of Panama. It inhabits fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich rivers draining to both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama. Its presence so far from the main South American Loricariidae diversity makes it an object of fascination for both hobbyists and ichthyologists.
In captivity, Sturisoma panamense requires very clean water with strong oxygenation and moderate to strong current, reflecting its natural fast-flowing river environment. Water temperatures in the 22–27°C range are appropriate. This species is rarely exported and almost never available in mainstream aquarium retail, appearing only occasionally through specialist collectors with direct contacts in Panama.
Captive breeding data is minimal for this species. Hobbyists fortunate enough to obtain specimens should prioritise stable conditions and condition the fish thoroughly before attempting breeding. The species is presumed to follow standard Sturisoma reproductive behaviour.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15); strong oxygenation and current essential. Tank: 150 L minimum; smooth stones and driftwood; powerful filtration and surface agitation. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables; will graze algae from glass and rock. Breeding: Extremely limited captive data; standard Sturisoma protocols recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful with other riverine species; avoid tropically warm or sluggish tankmates.
