About

Garra flavatra is native to the Rakhine Yoma mountain range and adjacent river systems in western Myanmar, inhabiting fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich mountain streams with rocky substrates and strong current. Like other Garra species, it is adapted to life in torrential flow with sucker-like mouth modifications that allow it to cling to rocks against strong current.

The 'Panda' common name refers to the distinctive black and white pattern: alternating dark and pale areas across the body create a pattern reminiscent of giant panda markings, with a pale body crossed by dark saddle-like patches and a contrasting patterned head. The coloration is quite variable with age and condition — juveniles are typically more boldly marked, while adults may develop additional yellow-orange highlights.

Garra flavatra is an active, diurnal fish that spends its time scraping algae and biofilm from rock surfaces using its specialized underslung, disc-like mouth. It is commonly confused with similar Garra species and with the unrelated Yaoshania pachychilus (Panda Loach).

In the aquarium, Panda Garras are excellent algae grazers for hard, cooler water setups — their care requirements are very similar to hillstream loaches: high oxygen, strong current, cool water, and hard surfaces for grazing.

Care Guide

Panda Garras require cool, well-oxygenated, clean water with strong current: pH 7.0–8.0, hardness 5–15 dGH, and temperatures 18–25°C. Sustained temperatures above 25°C cause stress — they are cool-water specialists. High oxygen levels and significant water movement via powerheads or spray bars are essential.

A minimum 80-liter aquarium with smooth rocks, slate, pebbles, and minimal substrate provides an ideal environment. Bright lighting encourages algae and biofilm growth on surfaces — their primary food. Avoid soft substrate — they graze on hard, stable surfaces.

Feed primarily through natural algae development on rocks and glass. Supplement with algae wafers, sinking spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach). Occasional small protein foods (daphnia, bloodworms) can be offered weekly.

Panda Garras are peaceful with most community species that tolerate similar cool, fast-flowing water conditions: hillstream loaches, danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, cool-water barbs, and small cool-water corydoras. May be mildly territorial with other Garra in small spaces.

Keep in small groups of 2–4 in medium tanks, or larger groups in bigger aquariums with multiple rock territories. Water changes of 30–40% weekly with temperature-matched water maintain the pristine conditions required.
