Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Panda Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Panda Platy takes its name from the giant panda's iconic black-and-white colouration. The white to pale silver body is broken by black patches typically covering the eye region, dorsal fin, and portions of the caudal fin, creating a pattern that bears a passing resemblance to its ursine namesake.
Pattern distribution varies between individuals and can range from minimal black accents to quite bold black patches, which adds natural variation to a group of Panda Platies. This variation makes selecting for a consistently striking pattern an interesting aspect of breeding this variety.
Panda Platies share the same excellent hardiness and community temperament of all Xiphophorus maculatus varieties.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water. Tank: 60 L minimum; plants and open swimming areas; standard community setup. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts all foods including flake, pellets, vegetables, and live/frozen. Breeding: Prolific; pattern distribution in fry varies; select most striking individuals for further breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; excellent with all non-aggressive species.
