Caridina cf. cantonensis
Also known as: Panda Shrimp, Caridina Panda
Origin: Captive bred (Caridina cf. cantonensis lineage)
The Panda Shrimp is one of the most recognisable and beloved Caridina pattern morphs, displaying bold alternating sections of jet black and pure white that clearly evoke its panda namesake. The patterning typically consists of black head and tail sections with white midsection coverage, though the exact distribution varies among grades and individuals.
Like Crystal Red and Crystal Black Shrimp, the Panda requires immaculate soft, acidic water with near-zero carbonate hardness. Active buffering substrate and RO water with Caridina mineral salts are essential for long-term success. Even minor fluctuations in water parameters can trigger moulting problems and fatalities in this sensitive species.
Panda Shrimp are active and endearing invertebrates that breed moderately well in optimal conditions. They are a natural choice for aquarists who have mastered basic Caridina care and want to explore pattern morphs.
Water: 18–23°C, pH 5.8–6.6, GH 3–6, KH 0–2; RO water with Caridina mineral salt required. Tank: minimum 20 L with active buffering substrate; sponge filter; dense moss planting. Feeding: biofilm, snowflake food, algae wafers, quality shrimp powders; feed sparingly. Breeding: moderate; females carry 15–25 eggs; juveniles require biofilm-rich mature tank. Compatibility: Caridina-only setup; never mix with Neocaridina; no fish.
