Pangio cuneovirgata
Also known as: Striped Kuhli, Cuneovirgata Loach, Banded Pangio
Origin: Borneo
Pangio cuneovirgata, the Striped Kuhli Loach or Kuhl's Kuhli Variant, is a small loach from the peat swamp streams and blackwater rivers of Borneo. Though not a danionid, it is a natural ecological companion to species such as Sundadanio axelrodi, sharing the same soft, acidic, tannin-stained water conditions. It bears attractive dark and pale banding across a slender, eel-like body.
In the aquarium it is a peaceful, secretive species that spends much of its time buried in soft substrate or sheltering among leaf litter and plant roots. In the evening and at night it becomes more active, searching for food particles across the substrate. It is entirely harmless to other fish and invertebrates.
For blackwater nano tanks combining Sundadanio and small shrimp or rasbora species, Pangio cuneovirgata provides welcome bottom-level activity and occupies an ecological niche left empty by most mid-water nano fish. Its soft-water requirements must be matched carefully for long-term health.
Water: Temperature 22–28°C, pH 4.0–6.5, GH below 8; soft acidic blackwater conditions essential; peat filtration or Indian almond leaves beneficial. Tank: Minimum 60 L; soft sand substrate for burrowing; leaf litter and driftwood; gentle sponge filtration. Feeding: Micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, and sinking wafers; forages for food particles at the substrate surface during evening hours. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; soft acidic water and seasonal cues may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with all nano fish; ideal blackwater companion for Sundadanio, small rasboras, and micro shrimp.
