Pangio filinaris
Also known as: Filinaris Kuhli Loach, Thread-fin Kuhli, Filament Loach
Origin: Borneo
Pangio filinaris is a remarkable kuhli loach species from Borneo, distinguished by the dramatically elongated, thread-like rays of the dorsal fin that project well above the body profile. This unique feature is unparalleled among other Pangio species and makes P. filinaris immediately recognisable. It inhabits the slow-flowing, tannin-stained streams and peat swamps of Bornean lowland forests.
In the aquarium, Pangio filinaris requires the blackwater conditions typical of Bornean species: soft, acidic water, dark substrate, Indian almond leaves, and abundant plant cover or driftwood. A secure, tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential as this species is as adept at escaping as any other kuhli loach. Groups of five or more provide security in numbers and encourage daytime activity.
Feeding consists of micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and cyclops. The filamentous dorsal fin is delicate and can be damaged by fin-nipping tankmates, so companions must be selected carefully — other peaceful nano fish and dwarf shrimp are ideal. Pangio filinaris is a genuine showpiece species within the kuhli loach group, offering collectors something truly unique.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–29°C, soft and acidic; blackwater conditions ideal. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, Indian almond leaves, dense plant cover, tight-fitting lid. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, cyclops. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Keep with docile nano companions only; avoid any fin-nipping species.
