Apistogramma pantalone
Also known as: Pantalone Apisto, Black-pelvic Apistogramma, Theatrical Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma pantalone is one of the most recently described species in the genus, named for the commedia dell'arte character Pantalone in reference to the male's dramatically elongated, jet-black pelvic fins that hang beneath the body like trailing black trousers — a unique feature within the genus. This Peruvian species is already generating significant collector interest despite its very recent formal description.
The species inhabits soft, acidic lowland streams in the Peruvian Amazon and requires typical blackwater conditions for long-term health. Beyond its extraordinary pelvic fins, males also display attractive yellow body coloration with blue iridescent scale rows and red-edged dorsal fins.
Given its novelty and rarity, A. pantalone is currently best suited to experienced Apistogramma keepers who can provide optimal conditions and contribute to establishing captive breeding populations.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C, low TDS. Tank: 80 L; fine sand, caves, leaf litter, and dense planting to showcase the species. Feeding: Live and frozen micro-prey; high-quality pellets as supplement. Breeding: Cave spawner; newly described — breeding reports still emerging from specialist keepers. Compatibility: Only the most peaceful small species; best in species tank.
