Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro
Also known as: Pantanal Pike Characin, Pantanal Pike Tetra
Origin: Pantanal and Paraguay River, South America
Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro is native to the Pantanal wetlands and the Paraguay River system, one of the world's largest tropical wetland ecosystems. It is a medium-sized predatory characin reaching about 25 cm with a handsome tan-silver body, prominent dark lateral stripe, and vivid red-orange colouration at the tips of the fins. Its Pantanal origin means it experiences significant seasonal temperature variation and is more tolerant of a range of conditions than strictly Amazonian species.
In the aquarium A. pantaneiro requires a minimum 400-litre setup with good oxygenation and filtration. Its tolerance for a moderate temperature range — down to 22°C — and slightly harder water make it one of the more adaptable Acestrorhynchus species in captivity. It remains, however, a predatory fish that will consume any appropriately sized tankmates and should be housed with care.
Feeding includes live or frozen fish, large frozen bloodworm, and shrimp. Weaning to high-quality carnivore pellets is usually achievable with patience. The red-orange fin tips against the silver body make A. pantaneiro one of the more colourful pike characins and it is a visually attractive specialist option for large predatory fish enthusiasts.
Water: Moderately soft, pH 6.0–7.5, 22–28°C; Pantanal species; tolerates moderate temperature variation. Tank: 400 L minimum; open water lanes; secure lid; robust filtration. Feeding: Piscivore — live or frozen fish, prawns; wean toward carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not documented. Compatibility: Predatory; best solo or with large robust tankmates.
