Parathelphusa pantherina
Also known as: Panther Crab, Spotted Sulawesi Crab
Origin: Lake Matano, Sulawesi, Indonesia
Parathelphusa pantherina is a wholly aquatic freshwater crab endemic to Lake Matano in Sulawesi, featuring a cream to off-white carapace covered in distinctive dark spots reminiscent of a panther's coat. It requires the warm, alkaline, mineral-rich water of its Sulawesi biotope and does best in a species-specific aquarium.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.5–8.5, hard water with Sulawesi mineral salts; stable parameters are critical. Tank: Minimum 60L with rocks, caves, and driftwood for shelter; a sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal. Feeding: Omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched meaty foods, vegetables, and dried shrimp. Behaviour: Active and curious; territorial toward conspecifics; primarily nocturnal. Compatibility: Not safe with shrimp or small fish; keep in species-only or with robust Sulawesi species.
