Pao baileyi
Also known as: Mekong Bailey's Puffer, Bailey's River Puffer, Spotted River Puffer
Origin: Mekong River basin (Thailand, Laos)
Pao baileyi from the Mekong drainage has a slightly more slender body and subtler spot pattern compared to specimens collected from the Chao Phraya basin, likely reflecting ecological divergence within the species' range. This medium-sized freshwater puffer is an active hunter, patrolling its territory in search of invertebrates and small fish. It requires a roomy aquarium with plenty of open swimming space, a sandy substrate for occasional resting, and clean, well-oxygenated water. Hard-shelled prey must be offered regularly to prevent beak overgrowth, which is a common health problem in captive puffers given insufficient hard food. Only one specimen per tank is feasible unless the setup is very large with full visual barriers.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, soft to moderately hard; high oxygenation; 30% weekly changes. Tank: 100 L minimum; open sand bottom, robust plants or artificial décor; avoid sharp edges. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clam flesh, crayfish, frozen shrimp; hard food multiple times weekly. Breeding: No documented captive records; seasonal in the wild. Compatibility: Solitary; extremely aggressive; no viable tankmates in standard aquarium.
