Pao cf. cochinchinensis
Also known as: Short-body Cochin Puffer, Balloon Cochin Puffer, Compact Mekong Puffer
Origin: Lower Mekong tributaries, Cambodia and Vietnam
The short-body form of Pao cf. cochinchinensis from lower Mekong tributaries in Cambodia and Vietnam presents a noticeably more compact, rounded body compared to the elongate typical form, a trait that may reflect either a regional population variant or a selective morph arising from captive breeding in Vietnamese ornamental fish facilities. Whether wild or farm-produced, the short-body form requires identical care to all Pao complex puffers: a spacious aquarium, clean neutral to slightly acidic water, regular hard prey for beak maintenance, and strictly solitary housing. The compact silhouette and slightly more rounded head give this form an unusual and appealing appearance that distinguishes it immediately from standard Pao imports. It is occasionally traded through Vietnamese and Cambodian export channels.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, soft to moderate; clean water essential; 30% weekly changes. Tank: 100 L minimum; sandy substrate, driftwood and smooth rock décor; moderate filtration. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, small crayfish, earthworms; hard food 3–4 times weekly. Breeding: Not documented; wild or farm-produced origin uncertain. Compatibility: Solitary; aggressive; no viable tankmates in standard aquarium settings.
