Pao cf. leiurus
Also known as: Saigon Puffer, Mekong Delta Humpback, Vietnamese River Puffer
Origin: Southern Vietnam (Mekong Delta tributaries)
This southern Vietnamese form of Pao cf. leiurus is collected from slow rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta around Ho Chi Minh City. It exhibits a warmer yellow-brown base colouration with more diffuse, less-defined spotting compared to upriver Cambodian populations, consistent with adaption to the turbid, silt-laden waters of the delta. It shares the characteristic humped dorsal profile of the cf. leiurus complex and requires the same essential care: a spacious tank, clean water, regular hard prey, and solitary housing. Water temperature can trend slightly higher than for upriver populations given the tropical lowland origin. This form is occasionally available from Vietnamese specialist exporters.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 25–28°C, soft to moderate; strong filtration; avoid high nitrate accumulation. Tank: 120 L minimum; sand substrate, driftwood, robust or artificial plants; good surface agitation. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, cockles, earthworms; rotate variety; hard food essential throughout life. Breeding: Not recorded in captivity; Vietnamese wet-season spawner presumed. Compatibility: Solitary; will attack any tankmate; single-specimen dedicated aquarium required.
