Xenotilapia papilio
Also known as: Papilio Sand Cichlid, Butterfly Sand Cichlid, Papilio Xenotilapia
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Papilio Sand Cichlid is one of the most visually refined Xenotilapia species, with males displaying delicate fin patterning reminiscent of butterfly wings during courtship. It inhabits sandy shallows in Lake Tanganyika and practices biparental mouthbrooding where fry are passed between the parents. Groups thrive in spacious, sand-floored aquaria.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; fine unobstructed sand substrate essential. Tank: Minimum 150L; wide, low-profile tank with open sandy bottom and minimal rockwork. Feeding: Micro-sized sinking foods — frozen brine shrimp, cyclops, mysis, and fine-grained cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful and schooling in nature; biparental mouthbrooding pair bonds form within groups. Compatibility: Tanganyika community with other peaceful bottom and mid-water species.
