Satanoperca pappaterra
Also known as: Pappaterra Eartheater, Guaporé Eartheater
Origin: Brazil, Bolivia (Guaporé, upper Madeira drainages)
Satanoperca pappaterra is among the largest eartheaters in the genus, native to the Guaporé and upper Madeira river drainages of Brazil and Bolivia. It inhabits seasonal floodplains, oxbows, and slow-moving river margins with sandy and silty substrates. Its deep, laterally compressed body is adorned with bold rows of dark lateral spots and subtle fin colouration. The species is adapted to conditions that can include low oxygen in shallow floodplain habitats, giving it slightly more resilience than truly blackwater Satanoperca. In captivity it needs a very large aquarium with ample sand, open space, and high-quality filtration. A delayed mouthbrooder, it spawns in groups and is peaceful with similarly sized companions. Feed a varied, protein-rich diet.
Water: Soft to moderately soft; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 25–29 °C. Tank: 350 L+; fine sand, open areas, minimal decoration. Feeding: Large sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, mysis, and krill. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; group of 5+ adults; stable conditions essential. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with robust, similarly sized South American species.
