Papyrocranus afer
Also known as: African Bronze Featherback, African Featherback Knife Fish
Origin: West Africa, Senegal to Congo
Papyrocranus afer is a large, laterally compressed knife fish from the rivers and flooded forests of West and Central Africa. Its dramatically flattened body and long, continuous anal fin give it a feather-like profile, and it swims with a sinuous, rippling motion that is hypnotic to observe. Juveniles are often sold when small, but adults can reach 60 cm, making appropriate long-term housing essential.
This species is a dedicated nocturnal predator, spending daylight hours hidden in submerged wood, root tangles, or caves. The aquarium should be very large with numerous hiding places, dim lighting, and good quality water. Strong, well-secured filtration is necessary to handle the bioload of a large carnivore. A tight-fitting, weighted lid is essential as featherbacks are capable jumpers.
Papyrocranus afer will consume any fish that fits in its mouth. Tank mates must be large enough to be safe. Frozen and live meaty foods — prawns, earthworm, fish fillet, and large frozen bloodworm — are accepted, though some individuals take time to wean onto dead foods.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 400 L, large caves and wood for shelter, weighted lid essential, subdued lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, earthworm, fish fillet, large frozen bloodworm; feed at night. Breeding: Very rarely achieved in captivity; requires very large, dedicated setups. Compatibility: Aggressive toward small fish; keep only with very large, robust African species.
