Pterygoplichthys sp. (L075)
Also known as: Para Pleco L075, L075 Pleco, Eastern Amazon Suckermouth
Origin: Pará state, Brazil
The Para Pleco L075 is a large loricariid collected from the rivers of Pará state in eastern Brazil, representing a distinct population from L026 with a coarser, more irregular spot pattern on a darker background. Both L026 and L075 belong to the Pterygoplichthys group and share a robust constitution well-suited to turbid, high-nutrient Amazonian river conditions.
As a herbivore, L075 feeds primarily on algae, biofilm, and plant detritus. In captivity provide spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, and large driftwood for grazing and shelter. It is a powerful and prolific algae grazer that can efficiently clean the glass and decor of a large aquarium. Strong filtration is essential to manage the substantial bioload of this large species.
L075 is generally peaceful and tolerant of a wide range of tankmates. Compatible with large cichlids, robust catfish, and other sizeable South American species. Ensure the aquarium is large enough to avoid territorial conflicts with other large bottom dwellers. Lifespan can exceed 15 years in well-maintained conditions.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–18, KH 1–12; highly adaptable and tolerant. Tank: 300 L minimum; large driftwood, rock caves, powerful canister or sump filtration. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, large driftwood. Breeding: Large cave spawner; requires very large, established aquarium for breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful; one of the most community-tolerant large plecos.
