Parachromis dovii
Also known as: Wolf Cichlid, Dow's Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Parachromis dovii is arguably the most impressive cichlid in Central America by sheer power, personality, and size. Males from the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and Nicaragua develop a spectacular gold-to-cream body overlaid with a complex pattern of black spots and blotches, and can grow to over 70cm. Females are generally blue-violet with black spots and reach a smaller size. This apex predator is entirely unsuitable for a community aquarium and should be housed as a solo specimen or in a carefully monitored bonded pair. Long-lived, highly intelligent, and intensely interactive with its keeper.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 1500L for an adult; extremely strong filtration; minimal moveable décor to prevent damage. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid pellets, frozen whole prawn, mussel, and earthworms; do not overfeed. Breeding: Bonded pairs spawn in large open pits; extraordinary aggression during brood care; both parents lethal to intruders. Compatibility: Solo specimen only or proven bonded pair; consumes all fish it can overpower.
