Parachromis friedrichsthalii
Also known as: Friedrichsthal's Cichlid, Yellowjacket Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a large predatory cichlid distributed along the Atlantic slope of Central America from Mexico to Honduras. Its distinguishing feature is a pattern of dark spots or short dashes arranged in horizontal rows on a gold to olive body, creating a cheetah-like effect unlike the more randomly spotted P. managuensis. It inhabits large rivers, lakes, and lagoons, where it uses ambush tactics to capture fish and invertebrates. In the aquarium it is bold, interactive with its keeper, and extremely aggressive toward conspecifics and most tankmates.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 600L; robust filtration; minimal décor to prevent fin damage during aggressive encounters. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid pellets, frozen whole prawn, mussel, krill, and occasional earthworm. Breeding: Large pit spawner; male extremely aggressive to female after spawning; divider recommended. Compatibility: Solo or bonded pair only; eats all fish it can overpower.
