Parachromis loisellei
Also known as: Loiselle's Cichlid, Loisellei Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Parachromis loisellei is found in rivers and lakes of Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica. Slimmer and faster-growing than P. managuensis, it develops a complex pattern of small dark spots and blotches on a gold-olive body. Its more elongated profile gives it a different visual impact compared to the stockier Jaguar Cichlid. Like all Parachromis, it is an explosive predator with a very large gape capable of consuming surprisingly large prey items. An intelligent, bold fish that becomes interactive with its keeper when regularly fed by hand. Requires massive aquaria due to its adult size.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 600L; ample swim space; strong filtration to manage heavy waste load. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid sticks, frozen prawn, mussel, earthworms; train off live fish as soon as possible. Breeding: Large open-pit spawner; male and female can be incompatible; monitor pair closely after spawning. Compatibility: Solo specimen or bonded pair; consumes all smaller fish.
