Parachromis managuensis
Also known as: Gold Jaguar Cichlid, Golden Jaguar Cichlid
Origin: Captive-bred (base: Nicaragua, Honduras)
The Gold Jaguar Cichlid is a selectively bred color variant of Parachromis managuensis in which the typical silver-white base coloration is replaced by a vivid golden-yellow ground color. This enhancement makes the dark black jaguar patterning — the irregular blotches, spots, and bars that give the species its common name — stand out with exceptional contrast, creating one of the most visually dramatic large cichlids available in the hobby.
All care parameters are identical to the standard Jaguar Cichlid: this is a large, powerful predatory species that requires a very large aquarium, protein-rich diet, and robust water quality management. The Gold variant may show slightly reduced growth rate compared to wild-type specimens as is common with selectively bred color morphs.
Despite its aggressive reputation, P. managuensis (including the Gold variant) is a highly intelligent species that often becomes interactive with its keeper. Breeding the Gold variant requires careful partner matching to maintain the golden base color in offspring, ideally pairing Gold × Gold.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20, KH 4–12; powerful filtration; large weekly water changes. Tank: 800 L minimum for a pair; minimal decor, large flat rocks, open swimming space. Feeding: Carnivore — large pellets, whole fish, large shrimp, mussel; high-protein diet for full coloration. Breeding: Flat-rock spawner; very aggressive pair defense; large clutches (1000+ eggs possible in adults). Compatibility: Species tank or with equally large robust cichlids only; will consume smaller fish.
