Parachromis managuensis
Also known as: Honduras Jaguar Cichlid, Honduras Managua Cichlid
Origin: Central America
The Honduras locality form of Parachromis managuensis is recognised among hobbyists for producing individuals with exceptionally bold, sharply defined dark spots on a very rich gold base colouration compared to many captive-bred strains. Originating from Honduran rivers and lakes, this form represents some of the most classically attractive Jaguar Cichlids available. Like all P. managuensis, it is a formidable predator that grows very large and becomes a deeply personalised fish, recognising its keeper and interacting with the aquarium glass during feeding. Massive aquaria and heavy filtration are absolute requirements.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 800L; very robust setup with minimal moveable items; industrial-grade filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; large sinking cichlid pellets, whole prawn, mussels, earthworms; wean off live fish. Breeding: Very large open-pit spawner; extreme aggression during spawning; separate tank for pair. Compatibility: Solo or bonded pair in dedicated tank only; kills most fish it encounters.
