Parachromis managuensis
Also known as: Nicaragua Jaguar Cichlid, Managua Cichlid (Wild)
Origin: Central America
The Nicaragua locality Jaguar Cichlid represents the nominate wild population of Parachromis managuensis from Lake Managua and associated rivers. This form displays the classic species appearance — a cream to gold body marked with an irregular scatter of large dark blotches that rearranges somewhat as the fish ages and grows. Wild Nicaraguan specimens are renowned for their large adult size and bold, fearless personality in the aquarium. This is a fish for dedicated large-predator enthusiasts with the space and commitment to provide a species-appropriate environment for a 15–20 year lifespan.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 800L; robust substrate and décor; extremely high-capacity filtration essential. Feeding: Carnivore; large pellets, whole prawn, mussels, earthworms, and occasional meaty treats. Breeding: Open pit spawner on large flat surfaces; male extremely aggressive to female; monitor closely. Compatibility: Solo specimen or proven bonded pair; consumes all fish it can overpower.
