Betta splendens
Also known as: Paradise Betta, Long Veil Betta, Fancy Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Paradise bettas are selected for an especially long, flowing veil with rich, saturated colouration — often combining blue, red, and iridescent tones. Their extended finnage creates an almost surreal rippling effect as they move through the water. They are best kept in calm, low-flow aquariums to prevent fin damage.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — very gentle flow to protect the long fins. Tank: minimum 20L, densely planted with broad-leaved plants for surface resting. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males are territorial — one per tank; tends to be a majestic, slow swimmer. Compatibility: best with very gentle community fish; avoid nippy species entirely.
