Apistogramma commbrae
Also known as: Paraguay Dwarf Cichlid, Commbrae Apisto, Southern Apistogramma
Origin: Paraguay
Apistogramma commbrae occupies a unique niche among the genus: it is native to the Paraguay River drainage of Paraguay and Argentina, placing it far south of the typical Amazonian apisto range. This geographical origin grants it significantly greater tolerance for harder, more neutral water conditions — a trait that makes it accessible to hobbyists who cannot achieve true blackwater parameters.
Males display attractive yellow-and-brown banding with blue scale iridescence, while females adopt an intense yellow breeding dress. The species is quite active and can be kept in a decorated community aquarium with other South American species.
Despite its hardier nature, A. commbrae still benefits from soft substrate, ample hiding places, and a varied diet. It is one of the best entry points into Apistogramma keeping.
Water: Tolerates moderate hardness — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–27°C; adapts to tap water in many regions. Tank: 60 L minimum; sandy or fine gravel substrate with caves and plants. Feeding: Varied diet including flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen invertebrates. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards fry; easier to breed than most apistos due to broader water tolerance. Compatibility: Community-friendly; excellent with peaceful South American tetras, livebearers, and Corydoras.
