Gymnogeophagus balzanii
Also known as: Paraguay Eartheater, Balzani's Eartheater
Origin: South America
Gymnogeophagus balzanii is one of the hardiest eartheaters, capable of tolerating temperatures as low as 16°C, making it suitable for unheated aquariums in temperate climates. Males develop a prominent hump and extended fin rays with age. A mouthbrooder that is relatively forgiving of water chemistry.
Water: 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, tolerates moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 250L, fine sand, some rock formations and driftwood for territory definition. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, blanched vegetables. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive between males; calm in mixed groups. Compatibility: Compatible with subtropical South American fish; avoid tropical-only species.
