Paraguay Talking Catfish

Trachydoras paraguayensis is a moderately sized doradid native to the Paraguay River system, including the vast Pantanal wetlands of Brazil and Bolivia. It is a more slender and streamlined species than many of its relatives, with fine spiny lateral scutes and a mottled brownish pattern that provides camouflage against sandy and muddy substrates.

In the aquarium, Trachydoras paraguayensis behaves in typical doradid fashion — nocturnal, secretive by day, and active forager by night. It is tolerant of a reasonably wide range of water conditions given its origin in the seasonally variable Pantanal. The species is rarely imported specifically but occasionally appears in mixed shipments of South American catfish.

This catfish is peaceful and suitable for large South American community setups. It will eat most sinking foods including pellets, wafers, and frozen invertebrates. Its modest size and adaptable nature make it a good choice for aquarists looking for a less common talking catfish alternative to the Humbug or Spotted Talking Catfish.

Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.0–7.8, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–18). Tank: 150 L minimum; sand substrate; driftwood and cave hides; robust planting optional. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, snails, and small invertebrates; feed after lights-out. Breeding: Unreported in captivity; presumed to require wet/dry season simulation. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with large tetras, cichlids, and other robust South American community fish.
