Paralabidochromis chilotes
Also known as: Thick-Lip Paralabidochromis, Victorian Rock Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Paralabidochromis chilotes is a robust Victorian haplochromine with characteristically hypertrophied lips used to extract invertebrates from rock surfaces and crevices in the littoral zone of Lake Victoria. The thick lips give the fish a distinctive appearance, and the species is often compared to thick-lipped mbuna from Lake Malawi due to superficial ecological parallels. Males in breeding condition develop attractive blue-orange colouration across the head and flanks.
In the aquarium, P. chilotes requires substantial rocky décor to enable natural foraging behaviour and territory establishment. It is more carnivorous than many Victorian haplochromines in its dietary preferences, and frozen meaty foods should form a significant part of the diet. Plant-based supplements remain important to prevent bloat.
As with other Paralabidochromis, aggression is moderate to high between males. The harem arrangement — one male, two to three females — manages aggression effectively and promotes natural breeding behaviour.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; 25-30% weekly water changes. Tank: 150L+; ample rocky surfaces for foraging and territory; minimal substrate plants. Feeding: Frozen invertebrates as primary diet; cichlid pellets; limit excessive spirulina. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; eggs and larvae held ~3 weeks. Compatibility: Victorian species tank; one male; do not mix with P. chromogynos.
