Paralabidochromis chromogynos
Also known as: Chromogynos Victorian Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Paralabidochromis chromogynos is a small-to-medium Victorian haplochromine from rocky shoreline habitats on the Tanzanian coast of Lake Victoria. The species name references the distinctive colouration of females, and adult males develop vivid blue and red nuptial colouration that makes them outstanding aquarium subjects. The genus Paralabidochromis contains several visually similar species, and careful sourcing is recommended to ensure genetic purity.
In the aquarium, P. chromogynos requires abundant rocky décor replicating its natural littoral habitat. Males are territorial and aggressive toward rivals but can be managed in a well-structured aquarium. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder with typical Victorian cichlid breeding behaviour.
Water quality must be maintained at consistently hard, alkaline levels. A diet combining animal proteins — frozen invertebrates, small crustaceans — with plant-based foods ensures balanced nutrition and vibrant colouration.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; weekly 25% water changes. Tank: 150L minimum; dense rocky structure; minimal open water. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen mysis and brine shrimp, spirulina; varied and balanced. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; separate females with young if predation risk is high. Compatibility: Victorian species tank; keep with dissimilar Paralabidochromis only.
