Paralabidochromis sp. 'Rock Kribensis'
Also known as: Rock Kribensis Victorian, Victorian Kribensis
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Paralabidochromis sp. 'Rock Kribensis' is an undescribed Victorian cichlid that occupies a functional niche similar to the West African Pelvicachromis pulcher (kribensis), although the two are unrelated. The common name reflects this ecological and visual parallel — compact body, vivid male colouration featuring purple and yellow tones, and a preference for cave and crevice territories in rocky substrates. It is one of the smaller Paralabidochromis species available in the hobby.
Despite the kribensis comparison, Rock Kribensis is more aggressive than its West African namesake and should be housed in a Victorian species tank rather than a general community. The harem arrangement works well for this species, and breeding in captivity is achievable for aquarists with intermediate cichlid experience.
Water quality requirements follow the standard Victorian alkaline-hard profile. Diet should include both plant-based and animal protein components, with frozen invertebrates supplemented regularly.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard alkaline; regular water changes essential. Tank: 120L+; rocky caves and crevices; some open sand for display. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and spirulina. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; cave spawning behaviour; female holds ~3 weeks. Compatibility: Victorian species tank; do not house with larger aggressive Victorian cichlids.
