Piaractus mesopotamicus
Also known as: Parana Pacu, Paco, Southern Pacu
Origin: Paraná-Paraguay basin, South America
Piaractus mesopotamicus is the dominant Piaractus species of the Paraná-Paraguay-Uruguay river systems, where it supports a major commercial fishery. It closely resembles P. brachypomus but displays a more subtly coloured ventral region and reaches a slightly smaller maximum size, though still a very large fish by any measure.
Its southern origin grants tolerance for temperatures down to 18°C, which broadens its keeping window slightly. It is extensively hybridised with P. brachypomus in aquaculture ('tambatinga'), and such hybrids occasionally appear in the trade. Like all pacus, only truly large facilities are suitable for long-term care.
A responsible choice only for keepers with genuinely large facilities.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, moderately soft to moderately hard; tolerates brief temperature dips to 18°C better than Amazonian pacus. Tank: Minimum 1500L; powerful filtration with high flow; open swimming space essential; substrate of smooth gravel or sand. Feeding: Omnivore; fruits, vegetables, quality pellets, occasional protein; provide regular fresh plant matter for enrichment. Breeding: Commercial aquaculture only via hormonal induction; not feasible in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly large fish; adult size means the only truly suitable home is a large public-display or custom aquaculture system.
