Paraneetroplus bulleri
Also known as: Buller's Cichlid, Bulleri Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Paraneetroplus bulleri is endemic to the Rio Coatzacoalcos drainage of Oaxaca and Veracruz, Mexico. It is a stout, muscular cichlid adapted to swift-flowing, rocky river sections where it browses algae and biofilm from exposed rock surfaces. The body is greenish-grey with subtle gold-green iridescent scaling, and breeding fish develop more intensified fin colouration. In the aquarium it requires strong directional flow provided by powerheads and a rocky substrate to feel secure and display natural behaviour. A hardy, interesting species for dedicated Mexican cichlid biotope keepers.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.2, hard (GH 12–22); high oxygen and strong current are non-negotiable. Tank: Minimum 250L; rocky layout with powerheads; no delicate plants. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, and biofilm grazed from rocks. Breeding: Crevice or underrock spawner; both parents guard vigorously; strong flow must be maintained. Compatibility: With other rheophilic cichlids of similar size from the Coatzacoalcos region.
