Paraneetroplus melanurus
Also known as: Black-tailed Cichlid, Melanurus Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Paraneetroplus melanurus is endemic to the Rio Coatzacoalcos drainage of southern Mexico. It is a medium-sized, moderately deep-bodied cichlid with an overall greenish-silver colouration accented by subtle iridescent scaling and a conspicuous darkening of the caudal peduncle that gives the species its name. Like other Paraneetroplus, it is adapted to fast-flowing, rocky environments and appreciates strong current and high oxygen levels in the aquarium. A hardy species that rewards dedicated cichlid keepers interested in the Coatzacoalcos fauna.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.2, moderately hard (GH 8–18). Tank: Minimum 300L; rocky aquascape with strong water flow; durable plants or none. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched courgette and spinach, occasional frozen foods. Breeding: Cave or crevice spawner; pairs defend territory vigorously; fry are robust. Compatibility: With other robust Central American rheophilic cichlids of similar size.
