Paraneetroplus nebuliferus
Also known as: Paraneetroplus nebuliferus
Origin: Central America
Paraneetroplus nebuliferus is endemic to the Papaloapan river drainage in Oaxaca and Veracruz, Mexico. Its 'nebuliferus' name refers to the cloud-like (nebulous) blotching pattern across its silvery-olive body. It is a large-growing, deep-bodied cichlid with a significant herbivorous component to its diet, making algae and plant supplements important in captivity. Rarely available, it is greatly prized by Mesoamerican cichlid specialists.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 8–20). Tank: 400L+ for adults; include algae-covered rocks and open sandy areas for natural behaviour. Feeding: Omnivore, herbivore-biased; spirulina, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; herbivorous feeding behaviour; pairs are territorial around spawning sites. Compatibility: Compatible with other large robust Central American cichlids in spacious tanks.
