About

Parotocinclus aripuanensis is described from the Rio Aripuanã, a right-bank tributary of the Amazon in Mato Grosso and Amazonas states, Brazil. It belongs to the diverse genus Parotocinclus — a sister group to Otocinclus that includes species slightly larger on average and with a broader diet incorporating both algae and fine detritus. P. aripuanensis is a compact, moderately sized species with a lightly spotted or reticulated pattern and a typical loricariid body form.

The Rio Aripuanã drains an area of Amazon forest characterised by soft, moderately acidic, clear to slightly tannin-stained water. Like Otocinclus, P. aripuanensis is a social species found in groups in shallow, well-lit stream margins where periphyton growth is abundant. Its slightly broader diet compared to Otocinclus — incorporating detritus and fine organic particles alongside algae — gives it a slight edge in terms of nutritional flexibility in captivity.

In the aquarium, P. aripuanensis performs reliably as a mid-level algae and detritus manager. It is less commonly available than Otocinclus species but is worth seeking out for collectors who want variety in their small loricariid community. Care requirements are essentially the same as for Otocinclus: groups of six or more, excellent water quality, supplemental vegetable feeding, and soft slightly acidic water.

Care Guide

Water: Soft, slightly acidic at pH 5.5–7.0 and 22–27°C; excellent quality maintained by regular partial changes. Tank: 60 litres minimum with live plants, driftwood, and smooth stones. Feeding: Algae, detritus, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers; slightly broader diet than Otocinclus. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small to medium community species.
