Parotocinclus cearensis
Also known as: Parotocinclus cearensis, Ceará Parotocinclus
Origin: South America (Brazil, Ceará)
Parotocinclus cearensis is endemic to river systems draining the Caatinga biome of Ceará state in northeastern Brazil — one of the most challenging environments for freshwater fish in the continent. The Caatinga is a semi-arid scrubland where rivers are strongly seasonal: torrential during the rainy season and reduced to isolated pools during the dry season. Fish adapted to this environment have evolved resilience to extremes of temperature, water chemistry, and food availability that tropical Amazonian species could not survive.
P. cearensis reflects this adaptation. It is a compact, robustly built loricariid with a broad tolerance of water conditions compared to soft-water Amazonian Otocinclus and Parotocinclus species. Its water in nature can range from moderately soft to quite hard and alkaline depending on the geology and season, making it one of the most aquarium-adaptable species in the family. It feeds on algae, periphyton, and detritus, which are abundant during the productive wet season.
In the aquarium, P. cearensis is an excellent choice for hobbyists who prefer a more tolerant loricariid that does not require soft, acidic water. Its hardiness makes the acclimatisation period less critical than for Amazonian species, and its effective algae-cleaning performance in a wider range of conditions is a genuine practical advantage. It is a fascinating biogeographic subject as well as a functional aquarium inhabitant.
Water: Adaptable — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–28°C, soft to moderately hard; one of the most water-parameter-tolerant loricariids in this group. Tank: 60 litres minimum with plants and smooth hardscape; tolerates a wider range of setup conditions than Amazonian relatives. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm; readily accepts most supplemental foods. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; its seasonal adaptation may make breeding triggers complex. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community species; particularly useful for harder-water setups where other otocinclus struggle.
