Parotocinclus maculicauda
Also known as: Parotocinclus maculicauda, Spot-Tail Parotocinclus
Origin: South America (Brazil, southeastern rivers)
Parotocinclus maculicauda is distinguished from many of its congeners by the prominent dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin, giving rise to its species name (macula = spot, cauda = tail). It is described from southeastern Brazilian river systems and is one of the more commonly encountered Parotocinclus species in the trade. Its body is moderately sized with a lightly spotted or reticulated pattern and the robust build typical of the genus.
In nature, P. maculicauda inhabits the clear, flowing coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil's Atlantic Forest region. It forages over rocks, submerged wood, and aquatic vegetation in shallow stream margins, consuming periphyton, soft algae, and fine detritus. Its moderately robust build and slightly broader dietary range compared to Otocinclus make it somewhat more adaptable in the aquarium.
For hobbyists, P. maculicauda is a recommendable loricariid with good visual appeal thanks to its caudal spot, predictable care requirements, and effective algae-cleaning behaviour. It is less common than standard Otocinclus species but is not particularly demanding. It performs best in groups in well-maintained community aquaria with live plants and regular supplemental feeding.
Water: Soft to moderately hard at pH 6.0–7.5 and 20–26°C; stable conditions with regular partial water changes. Tank: 60 litres minimum with live plants, smooth hardscape, and moderate flow. Feeding: Biofilm supplemented with algae wafers and blanched vegetables; more willing to accept prepared foods than some relatives. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Excellent community species; pairs well with small tetras, corydoras, and shrimp.
