Hoplarchus psittacus
Also known as: Parrot Cichlid, Psittacus Cichlid
Origin: South America
Hoplarchus psittacus is a large, highly compressed cichlid native to the blackwater rivers of the Orinoco and Rio Negro. Its distinctive beak-like snout adapted for stripping aquatic vegetation and its vivid green colouration make it unmistakable. It demands very soft, acidic water and a large aquarium.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft acidic water essential (0-5 dGH). Tank: Minimum 400L tall aquarium, driftwood and leaf litter for blackwater effect. Feeding: Primarily herbivore; aquatic plants, blanched courgette, spirulina-based pellets, and some invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful for its size; surprisingly docile but territorial when spawning. Compatibility: Best with large peaceful blackwater species; avoid nippy or very aggressive fish.
